Marriage Chant

GREG BROWN lyrics - Marriage Chant found here

Marriage is impossible marriage is dull
Your dance card is empty your plate is too full
It's something no sensible person would do
I wish i was married i wish I was married
I wish i was married to you

Marriage is unnatural marriage is hard
You rotate your tires you work in the yard
You fight about nothing every hour or two
I wish i was married i wish i was married
I wish i was married to you

The children throw fits in airports & such
They projectile vomit on aunt ruthie at lunch
& your in-laws know just what you should do
But i wish i was married i wish i was married
I wish i was married to you

I'd like to fix you my special broth when you're sick
I'd like to fight with you when you're bein' real thick
There is no end to what i would like to do
I wish i was married i wish i was married
I wish i was married to you

I like the roll in rock & roll
& all i know is you're the sister of my soul
& we make a circle just we two
& i wish i was married i wish i was married
I wish i was married to you

The sky unpredictable mysterious the sea
Do we wish most for what never can be
It never can be i guess that's true
But i wish i was married i wish i was married
I wish i was uh huh huh to you

The grass is always greener is what they say to me
If I was your husband maybe I'd agree
I like brown grass & vows that stay true
& i wish i was married i wish i was married
I wish i was married to you to you to you mmhmm to you

Heath made me a mixed CD soon after we got engaged. This song was on it. Only the version I have says "I'm glad that I'm married to you" at the end of the song. This song was a hidden track on one of Greg Brown's albums. There is only one version of this song on YouTube. A live version with Ani Difranco. The lyrics are all the same on the sites I have checked. I don't know where Heath found the music file he put on the CD for me. I think a co worker shared it with him. Anyway, I love it more than ever now that it ends differently than any other version of this song I have been able to find.

I love this song. Marriage was always a dream of mine but in my efforts to be realistic I was very skeptical and pessimistic about marriage. I had not seen many examples of happily married couples and I made it my mission in life to spread my anti marriage propaganda. Then I met Heath. A man who respected women, honored his priesthood, and had a great sense of humor. He was so different from all the other guys I couldn't help but allow myself to fall in love.

Nine years and three kids later we are more in love now than ever. Happy anniversary, Heath. I love you.
